From the Arc de Triomphe to Le Peyrou: explore the secrets of historic Montpellier

Known as the Écusson, Montpellier’s old town takes its name from its distinctive pentagonal shape, reminiscent of a traditional coat-of-arms shield. A place for strolling, shopping and socialising, this largely pedestrian district is best discovered on foot.

Montpellier’s old town, built in the Middle Ages, reveals more than a thousand years of history. To discover its secrets, wander through the maze of cobbled streets such as Rue de l’Ancien Courrier and Rue du Bras de Fer. As you stroll, keep an eye out for the pontets, unique stone passageways linking neighbouring façades. You’ll also discover charming squares, independent shops, fountains, elegant townhouses and medieval remains.

Among the notable sites to see: Saint-Pierre Cathedral, the Faculty of Medicine (800 years old), the mikveh, an ancient Jewish ritual bath, or the Saint-Côme anatomical amphitheatre. In the Écusson district, the Babote Tower and the Pins Tower bear witness to the ancient medieval fortifications of the 12th century.

However, the structure that undoubtedly catches everyone’s eye is the 17th-century Arc de Triomphe. Just beyond this monument, take in a 360° view stretching all the way to Pic Saint-Loup from the viewpoint on the Promenade du Peyrou. Then take a seat on the terrace at Place de la Canourgue, Montpellier’s oldest and most romantic square, where the Fontaine des Licornes overlooks terraces shaded by hackberry trees.
