Fabre Museum
A major artistic immersion in the heart of Montpellier
Whether seeking shelter from the rain or exploring out of curiosity, visit the Fabre Museum, one of France’s largest fine arts museums.
The building itself, whose renovation has been praised far and wide, is worth discovering in its own right, alongside its outstanding collections. Each space tells the story of a different era: the hall designed by Daniel Buren, the glass pavilion that is illuminated at night, the galleries of the former 17th-century Jesuit college. Enjoy a journey through history as well as through art.
Today, more than 1,000 major works dating from the 14th to the 21st century are displayed across 9,300 m² of gallery space. Its permanent collections trace several centuries of European painting, from the Renaissance to contemporary art. Even visitors who do not consider themselves art enthusiasts are likely to linger over Bonjour Monsieur Courbet, as well as works by Bazille, Matisse, Delacroix and Soulages.
